The record for our May 10th session.  Dead relatives and PC's who won't take hint's no matter how blatent they become.  And there is special feeling that comes from watching a player fall for a trap that you know he has read about, 'cause he borrowed your "Traps & Treachery 2" book.  I love being DM, you can get away with doing things to people's PCs that you could never do otherwise without some ubercharacter and lots of amazing rolls.

May 10th

9 Thrimidge:  The group reaches Caer Vallas.  All but the ranger head into town.  When paying the entrance toll, Mirzam and Pfren discover that their own currency from Blackmoore is deemed worthless, and that their kind his not very welcome here.  They try to buy horses with what little money they have, only to find that they are far beyond their means.  Jonas tells them that it is just as well, as the ownership and use of horses is restricted for commoners.

The companions take a private room at the Hog's Head Inn.  In the night the druid Pfren notices that someone was trying to pick the lock to their room.  Nervous, they take watches, except the elf who, annoyed at the disturbance of his only night's sleep in a real bed in over two weeks sleeps through his watch.

10 Thrimidge:  Upon awakening, the companions find a broken arrow'one of Mirzam's own'lying at the foot of their bed.  Believing that he was being set up for something, Mirzam stashes all his arrows under the floorboards and goes off to the market with the druid for new ones and supplies.  Growing ever more nervous, the elf decides to leave the city early and joins the ranger at the outskirts.

Jonas unfortunately mentions to the druid that priests can sometimes own horses, and so Pfren pressures him to try again, as he is getting tired of constantly walking.  The two try once more at the stables in the nobles' quarter, and again they fail.  Frustrated and tiring of the stink of the city, Pfren leaves the city to join his comrades in the outskirts.  The monk, however, was determined to enjoy the luxury of the city as long as possible and decides to spend his last night here in a better inn, especially now that he is rid of the tribesmen who bring so much unwanted attention.

During his evening supper, Brother Jonas learns from a group of Ben'dictine monks staying at the same inn that three Blackmoore minstrels with great talent had passed through the city about a month back when they were last here.  It was also noted that some blackrobes had also took an interest in them and had been asking some very pointed questions about the musicians.  Jonas knew that rousing the interest of the Justicars was never a good thing.  Unsettled by this news, relates the news that night to his friends and the companions set out for Caer Mirabar that very night, not wanting to loose anymore time.

25 Thrimidge:  The companions have traveled north along the eastern coast of the Itherian Peninsula in the kingdom of Mirabar towards its capital of Caer Mirabar, a mighty fortress at the northern tip of the peninsula.  Despite it being late Thrimidge, the winds blew cold and the sky was gray low with rain.

As the companions drew close to the huge fortressed city, they began to see a grisly sight.  Prisoners and criminals, condemned to die, were displayed along various points on either side of the road.  Crucified, staked, hanged and caged, these unfortunate souls were kept in place long after they had died, their rotting carcasses wreathed in the mists serving as a perch to crows and as a warning to potential thieves and other miscreants that their kind were not welcome here.  It was in this somber company that the companions found Eol Tuall, member of Set's troupe and Pfren's own cousin.

Hanging at the end of a noose from a dead elm serving as a gallows, the bard looks to have died about two weeks before, judging by his state of composition.  A placard hanging around his neck upon his chest reads in bold script:

'TRIED AND CONVICTED BY THE BROTHERS JUSTICARIUS.  EXECUTED FOR THE CRIMES OF WITCHCRAFT, DEVIL-WORSHIP, THE CHANTING OF BLASPHEMOUS LAYS UPON FORBIDDEN COMPOSITIONS AND THE INVOCATION OF BLACK MAGICKS MOST FOUL AND UNNATURAL.

THE HEATHEN PATIENT REFUSED THE SUPPLICATIONS OF PENNANCE AND THE FORGIVENESS OF OUR LORD GOD 'RU THE MERCIFULL, THE COMPASSIONATE AND THE ALL-POWERFULL.

BEHOLD THE INEVITABLE FAT OF ALL WHO WOULD DISREGARD HIS LAW.

PITY THIS MAN, FOR HIS SOUL WAS CLAIMED BY THE DARK FORCES THAT HE HAD WILLINGLY SERVED IN LIFE.

IN DEATH HIS TORMENT AND DAMNATION SHALL BE ETERNAL AND UNENDING.

IN NOMINAE DOMINI 'RUVIUS EXCELLCIAE.

V.M.'

Distraught by the sight of his cousin's mutilated body, but unable to do anything for fear of attracting the attention of guards who patrolled the road, Pfren and Jonas entered the city.  But Mirzam and the ranger stayed behind with the dead bard, intent on giving Eol a proper burial under the cover of darkness.

Just after midnight, the ranger climbed the tree to cut the noose rope and Mirzam held the dead bard's legs to steady the body as it fell.  But the blackrobes had one more surprise in store for them.  Discovering traces of elvish blood within Eol's veins, the priests assumed that any friend of the bard would also have such a lineage.  The chief witch-hunter had a special concoction made that was especially poisonous to elves prepared in a sealed bladder and sown into the bard's chest.  When the ranger cut the rope, Eol's midsection fell apart spilling out his putrefying viscera and bursting open the delicate bladder containing the elvish poison upon Mirzam.  The wizard was caught off guard, and was exposed to a full dose.

Within seconds, the elf was on his knees, convulsing and gasping for air.  Mirzam soon lost consciousness and slipped into a coma.  Fearing the elf had died, the ranger began dragging Mirzam's body into a nearby copse of trees when he spotted a rolled-up piece of blood-soaked parchment near the bard's remains.  Curiosity overtook the ranger and he grabbed the bloody scroll.  Stashing Mirzam's body, Aubrey took Eol's broken body down to the Sea of Fallen Stars.  After saying a short prayer, the ranger tossed the corpse over the cliffs, relinquishing it to the dark waters below.
