Is Dungeons and Dragons becoming trendy?
While doing a routine search for gaming news I came across a lot of Dungeons and Dragons reference from Vin Diesel new file "The Chronicles of Riddick".

The articles go on and on about how Vin Diesel was and still is a geek for playing Dungeons and Dragons. The thing that gets me is that now that a 'cool' person said that they played the game it seem somewhat cooler to the masses? Why?

The same holds true for the Lord of the Rings series, when Peter Jackson bought JRR Tolkien's books to the big scream a lot of die hard fans were worried as to how well he would capture the essences of the book. Having never read the books I can not comment, I can only say that having friends who read the books they agreed that Jackson did a good job. When the first movie was released you heard people talking causally about elves in the supermarket.

One point in time in a gamer's life you had to talk in secrecy because you didn't want to be ostracized by the masses. Now if is rather hip if you know all the characters to the Lord of the Rings. Now I can talk about dwarves and elves and sorcery and not be shunned upon by the masses.

The question still remains why now? Why has Dungeons and Dragons become so darn popular? I really can not answer only that Lord of the Rings and Vin Diesel (to a lesser extent) have awakened a sleeping giant.

Now that the giant is awaken what shall he do? I hope to God that the makers of the Dungeons and Dragons sequel really put time and effort in to the film. I still stand with my theory that in order for the sequel to be considered good it has to be better than Lord of the Rings (quality wise).

If I could get the ear of the sleeping giant, I would whisper to it that now is the time to bring out a D20 systems based off of Lord of the Rings. Promote Dungeons and Dragons and convert those Lord of the Rings fans to the fantasy world. Embrace the roots of Dungeons and Dragons; let the whole world know that it was Tolkien that inspired Dungeons and Dragons.

Otherwise if the sleeping giant does nothing or only gives a half hearted attempt. Dungeons and Dragons will not be trendy for long. Instead the giant will slip back into a deep slumber and the wave of support will slowly wane.

That's just my 2 cents and with the cost of inflation yours may be a little less.
